Painting is a medium that has been around for a long time. Despite the advent of photography, film, and digital technology, it has continued to be a form of expression. Since so many paintings have been around for dozens of millennia, only a small number of them can be considered "timeless classics" that are well-known to the general public and were not coincidentally created by some of the greatest artists of all time. It doesn't say what combination of talent, genius, and circumstance results in a masterpiece. The answer is probably the simplest: you know one when you see one, whether it's in one of New York City's many museums (The Metropolitan Museum, the Guggenheim, MoMA, and others) or other countries. Naturally, we have our recommendations for what constitutes excellence, which we include in this list of the greatest paintings ever created.

Leonardo Da Vinci, Mona Lisa, 1503–19

Since its creation, Da Vinci's enticing portrait, which was painted between 1503 and 1517, has been plagued by two questions: Who is the person in question, and why is she smiling? Over the years, some hypotheses have been proposed to explain the first: that she is Francesco di Bartolomeo del Giocondo's wife, which explains the work's alternative title, La Gioconda; that Leonardo's childhood memories of her made her Caterina, Leonardo's mother; Lastly, that it is a drag-themed self-portrait. Regarding that well-known smile, its mysterious quality has frightened people for centuries. Whatever the reason, Leonardo used atmospheric perspective to create the idyllic landscape behind Mona Lisa, which fades into the distance with her serene expression.

Johannes Vermeer, Girl with a Pearl Earring, 1665

The 1665 study of a young woman by Johannes Vermeer is startlingly real and startlingly modern, almost like a photograph. This brings up the question of whether or not Vermeer created the image using a pre-photographic tool called a camera obscura. Having said that, the sitter's identity is unknown, though it has been speculated that she was Vermeer's maid. He shows her looking over her shoulder and locking eyes with the viewer as if she were trying to connect with them through time. Technically, Girl is not a portrait; rather, it is an example of the Dutch style known as a tronie—a headshot meant more as a still life of facial features than an attempt to portray a likeness.

Vincent van Gogh, The Starry Night, 1889

Vincent Van Gogh's most well-known painting, The starry Night was made by Van Gogh at the haven in Holy person Rémy, where he'd committed himself in 1889. For sure, The starry Night appears to mirror his violent perspective at that point, as the night sky wakes up with twirls and circles of frantically applied brush marks springing from the yin and yang of his devils and wonder of nature.

Pablo Picasso, Guernica, 1937

Guernica, perhaps Picasso's most well-known work, is an antiwar cris de 'Coeur inspired by the German and Italian aircraft allied with Fascist leader Francisco Franco that bombed the Basque city in 1937. The painting for the Spanish Pavillion at the 1937 World's Fair in Paris was commissioned by the leftist government that was against him. Guernica toured the world after its closure before arriving at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The painting was loaned to MoMA by Picasso with the condition that it be returned to his native Spain once democracy was restored, which it was in 1981, six years after Franco's death in 1975 (Picasso died two years earlier). The painting is currently on display in Madrid at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia

Café Terrace at Night by Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh, one of the most famous Dutch artists, painted Café Terrace at Night in 1888. The Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum is a common name for it. Additionally, when it was first displayed in 1891, it was referred to as "Coffeehouse at Night."

Lady with an Ermine by Leonardo da Vinci

One of Poland's national treasures is the painting "Lady with an Ermine," which was created by Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci between the years 1489 and 1490. Cecilia Gallerani is the subject; she was the wife of Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan, and Leonardo served in his administration.

Salvator Mundi, which Leonardo Da Vinci painted between 1490 and 1500, was the most expensive painting ever sold. The painting shows Jesus from the torso up, holding a crystal ball in his left hand and making the sign of the cross with his right hand. Even though this is the highest price ever paid for a painting, the piece's authenticity appeared to have been unknown for a decade before that. With the initial hypothesis that something happened in the middle the most expensive artist was Pablo Picasso. In that year, Picasso's works sold at international fine art auctions brought in approximately 671.5 million dollars. In 2021, Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat came in second and third, respectively, with auction revenues of approximately 439 million and 348 million dollars.

The English painter John William Waterhouse created The Lady of Shalott in 1888. It is a reworking of the 1832 poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson with the same title. Waterhouse painted three distinct versions of this character in 1888, 1894, and 1915. One of Waterhouse's most well-known paintings, it was painted several decades after the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood split up when he was still a young child.
